Visitor Pattern: Structure Remains Unchanged, Add New Operations
The Visitor Pattern is a behavioral pattern that allows defining new operations on objects without altering their structure. In the Visitor Pattern, the object structure typically consists of a complex class or set of classes, while new operations are defined by a visitor class.
In the Visitor Pattern, the visitor class usually contains a set of visit methods used to handle different elements within the object structure. Each element in the object structure implements an accept method, which accepts the visit from the visitor and passes itself as an argument to the visitor's visit method.
The implementation of the Visitor Pattern typically includes the following roles:
- Abstract Visitor Class (Visitor): Defines the visit methods for different elements within the object structure.
- Concrete Visitor Class (Concrete Visitor): Implements the interface defined by the abstract visitor class and contains specific implementations of the visit methods.
- Abstract Element Class (Element): Defines the interface for accepting a visit from a visitor.
- Concrete Element Class (Concrete Element): Implements the interface defined by the abstract element class and provides the implementation for accepting a visit from a visitor.
- Object Structure Class (Object Structure): Contains a collection of elements and provides an interface to traverse them.
The core idea behind the Visitor Pattern is to define new operations in an independent visitor class, thereby enabling the definition of new operations without modifying the object structure. The Visitor Pattern is suitable for scenarios such as:
- Defining new operations without changing the object structure, for example, defining new drawing operations within a graphics library.
- Having a stable number of element classes within the object structure but requiring frequent definitions of new operations.
The Visitor Pattern makes systems more flexible and extensible because it defines new operations in an independent visitor class, allowing easy addition, removal, or replacement of visitor classes. Furthermore, the Visitor Pattern can avoid the use of numerous conditional statements by converting conditional branches into different visitor classes. However, the Visitor Pattern may result in a large number of classes within the system, as a separate visitor class needs to be created for each element class.
