Tablespaces (Managing Data Storage) in PostgreSQL
What is a Tablespace?
In PostgreSQL, a tablespace is a partitioned segment used for storing data, which can improve system performance and reliability.
Why Use Tablespace?
Since PostgreSQL tablespaces support multiple file formats, you can choose an appropriate storage method based on your needs. For example, smaller, faster formats can be used to store frequently accessed data, while larger formats can be used to store large datasets.
Creating Tablespace
In PostgreSQL, a tablespace can be created using the CREATE TABLESPACE statement. This statement typically includes the names of tablespaces and options such as file location, number of partitions, etc.
CREATE TABLESPACE my_tablespace LOCATION '/path/to tablespaces' SIZE 100MB;
Using Tablespace to Store Data
When you create a table, PostgreSQL automatically stores its data in the tablespace. If we need to use another tablespace, we can use the ALTER TABLE statement to change the current table's tablespace to another one.
ALTER TABLE my_table SET TABLESPACE my_tablespace;
Using Tablespace to Restore Data
When PostgreSQL cannot find the original tablespace, you can use the RESTORE TABLESPACE statement to restore that tablespace. This situation usually occurs after changes in file system structure.
RESTORE TABLESPACE my_tablespace FROM 'path/to original tablespace';
Tablespace Options
When creating a tablespace, we can specify different options such as the number of partitions and storage types. These options can be adjusted according to specific needs.
Tablespace Partitioning
PostgreSQL supports multiple tablespaces partitioned in various ways that are stored and managed differently. For example, shared tables space partitions or unique tablespace partitions can be used.
CREATE TABLESPACE my_tablespace (pool=shared);
Tablespace Restoration
When PostgreSQL cannot find the original tablespace, you can use the RESTORE TABLESPACE statement to restore that tablespace. This situation usually occurs after changes in file system structure.
RESTORE TABLESPACE my_tablespace FROM 'path/to original tablespace';
Summary
A tablespace is a basic unit of PostgreSQL data storage, used to improve system performance and reliability. In PostgreSQL, we can create, use, and restore tablespaces to manage data storage.
