RabbitMQ Reconsume Issue & Solution

RabbitMQ is a message queue middleware based on the AMQP protocol that enables asynchronous communication between applications. In RabbitMQ, messages are sent and received asynchronously and can be shared among multiple consumers. However, this asynchronous communication may lead to issues where messages are consumed repeatedly.

The problem of duplicate consumption refers to a scenario where, when RabbitMQ sends a message to a consumer, the message is received by that consumer multiple times due to certain reasons. This can result in data being processed redundantly within an application, leading to inconsistent outcomes.

For example, if a consumer encounters an exception while processing a message and does not send a confirmation signal back to RabbitMQ, RabbitMQ will resend the same message to another consumer. This results in duplicate consumption of messages.

To avoid issues related to duplicate message consumption, RabbitMQ provides a mechanism known as "message acknowledgment." After receiving a message, consumers must send an acknowledgment signal back to RabbitMQ to indicate that the message has been successfully processed. If an exception occurs during message processing or if no acknowledgment is sent after processing, RabbitMQ will resend the message to another consumer.

Below is example code using Java and Spring Boot demonstrating how to use RabbitMQ's message acknowledgment mechanism to prevent duplicate consumption:

@Service
public class RabbitMQService {
    private final RabbitTemplate rabbitTemplate;

    public RabbitMQService(RabbitTemplate rabbitTemplate) {
        this.rabbitTemplate = rabbitTemplate;
    }

    @RabbitListener(queues = "${rabbitmq.queue}")
    public void receiveMessage(String message, Channel channel,
                               @Header(AmqpHeaders.DELIVERY_TAG) long tag) throws IOException {

        try {
            // Process the business logic for the message
            System.out.println("Received message: " + message);

            // Manually acknowledge that the message has been consumed successfully
            channel.basicAck(tag, false);
        } catch (Exception e) {
            // If an exception occurs while processing the message, manually reject it and requeue
            channel.basicReject(tag, true);
        }
    }

    public void sendMessage(String message) {
        rabbitTemplate.convertAndSend("${rabbitmq.exchange}", "${rabbitmq.routing-key}", message);
    }
}

In the code above, the @RabbitListener annotation is used to listen for messages in a RabbitMQ queue. When a message arrives, the receiveMessage method will be invoked; within this method, the channel and tag parameters are utilized to manually manage the consumption status of the message.

If an exception occurs during processing, the channel.basicReject(tag, true) method rejects that specific message and requeues it for retry. If the message has been processed successfully, the channel.basicAck(tag, false) method sends a confirmation signal indicating successful consumption by RabbitMQ. This ensures that even in case of exceptions, messages are not consumed repeatedly.
