Java Atomic Class Atomic Operations

The Atomic class in Java is a set of classes that support atomic operations. In a multi-threaded environment, these operations guarantee atomicity, thereby avoiding thread safety issues such as race conditions.

Common Atomic classes include:

  1. AtomicInteger: Performs atomic operations on int type values.
  2. AtomicLong: Performs atomic operations on long type values.
  3. AtomicBoolean: Performs atomic operations on boolean type values.
  4. AtomicReference: Performs atomic operations on reference type values.

The Atomic class provides various atomic operations, such as get(), set(), compareAndSet(), and getAndSet(). These operations ensure atomicity in a multi-threaded environment. For example, using AtomicInteger guarantees that operations on int types are atomic in a multi-threaded environment.

The Atomic class also provides methods to implement optimistic locking mechanisms, such as the compareAndSet() method. This method can perform operations similar to CAS (Compare And Swap), avoiding the performance issues associated with traditional locking mechanisms.

It is important to note that while the Atomic class guarantees the atomicity of operations, it does not guarantee visibility between operations. Therefore, when using the Atomic class, one must be mindful of thread safety issues.
