Java 14 New Features

Java 14 introduced numerous new features, among which the most significant include:

  1. Enhanced Switch Expressions: Java 14 further improved switch expressions, allowing developers to use multiple case labels sharing a single executable statement block. This feature enables developers to write code that is more concise and readable.
  2. Pattern Matching with instanceof: Java 14 introduced a new pattern matching syntax for the instanceof operator, enabling developers to write type-checking code in a more convenient and flexible manner.
  3. Records Class: A new Records class was introduced in Java 14; it is a lightweight class designed for representing data. The compiler automatically generates constructors, accessor methods (getters()), as well as equals() and hashCode() methods for such classes.
  4. Improved NullPointerException Handling: Java 14 enhanced the handling of NullPointerException, providing more detailed debugging information to help developers locate issues more easily.
  5. New Garbage Collector (ZGC): An experimental garbage collector named ZGC was introduced in Java 14. It is a low-latency garbage collector capable of managing very large heap sizes while maintaining extremely short pause times.
  6. Enhanced Pattern Class: Several new methods and features were added to the Pattern class, making regular expressions easier to use and understand. These improvements include support for embedded flags and named groups, among others.
// Example demonstrating pattern matching with instanceof in Java 14+
String text = "Hello World";
if (text instanceof String str && str.length() > 5) {
    System.out.println("Valid string found");
} else if ("World".equals(text)) { // Pattern matching logic applied here conceptually
    System.out.println("Specific match detected");
}

// Example demonstrating the use of a Record class for data representation
public record User(String name, int age) {}

User user1 = new User("Alice", 30);
System.out.println(user1.name()); // Output: Alice
System.out.println(user1.age()); // Output: 30
