Computer Network Classification

Classification by Communication Distance

Computer networks can be classified based on communication distance into: Local Area Networks, Metropolitan Area Networks, and Wide Area Networks.

  • Local Area Network (LAN): The scope of a LAN is relatively small, typically around 1 km.
  • Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): A MAN generally covers the area of one city, ranging from 5 to 50 kilometers.
  • Wide Area Network (WAN): The coverage range of a WAN usually spans tens to thousands of kilometers.

Classification by Network Users
