Airflow Concepts and Components
Airflow is an open-source platform for orchestrating, scheduling, and monitoring data pipelines. Below are some core concepts within Airflow:
- DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph): A DAG is a fundamental concept in Airflow, representing a set of directed acyclic graphs used to describe dependencies between tasks. In a DAG, each node represents a task, and edges represent the dependencies between tasks.
- Operator: An Operator is a basic unit that executes a task, defining the execution logic for that task. For example,
BashOperatorcan execute shell scripts,PythonOperatorcan execute Python functions, andSQLOperatorcan execute SQL queries. - Task: A Task is an instance of an Operator, representing a specific task within a DAG. A Task consists of a unique task ID, the Operator type, parameters, and other metadata.
- Task Instance: A Task Instance is a running instance of a Task, representing a single execution of a specific task within a DAG. Each Task may have multiple Task Instances, corresponding to different executions. A Task Instance contains information such as the task status, start time, end time, and more.
- Scheduler: The Scheduler is one of the core components of Airflow. It is responsible for calculating the execution order of each task based on DAG dependencies and scheduling rules, then submitting the tasks to the Executor for execution.
- Executor: The Executor is another core component of Airflow, responsible for actually executing the tasks. Airflow supports multiple types of Executors, including the Local Executor, Celery Executor, Dask Executor, and others.
- Sensor: A Sensor is a special type of Operator used to wait for a condition to be met before executing the next task. For example,
FileSensorcan wait for a file to appear before executing the next task, whileHttpSensorcan wait for an HTTP endpoint to return a specific response before proceeding. - Connection: A Connection is a connection configuration within Airflow used to store and manage connection information with external systems, such as database connections or API authentication details.
- Variable: A Variable is a variable configuration in Airflow used to store and manage global variables, such as configuration settings or API keys.
These are some of the core concepts in Airflow, which together form its basic architecture. Understanding these concepts can help us better grasp how Airflow works and how to use it effectively.
